Leigh. I'll do that and just for curiosity measure how much oil that amounts to.

Hi Leigh. I have just refilled the gearbox with 10w 40 oil so that the oil level is about 2mm above the bottom of the dip stick. It has only taken about 1/2 pint. The Haynes manual states 1 3/4 pints. What do you think?

I recommend ATF fluid for the gearbox, its thin enough to stop the plates from dragging. the "proper" oil is 30w oil.

must get dev 2 atf though as it doesn't have the modifiers that make wet clutches slip.

Chunky,

I don't know the exact amount but it isn't very much!
What I did to set the level in my g'box was to put the recommended amount of oil in then removed small amounts until the clutch stopped slipping.

With the amount stated in the manual the clutch will slip with a standard spring. You can get stronger springs which were necessary when running an 80cc barrel/piston.

Hi Leigh. I fitted the stronger spring when I fitted all new parts in the clutch. Slipping has not been the problem, its the clutch dragging even with next to no free play at the cable. I am hoping that 10w 40 oil is the answer (see my previous postings). Also could you send details of the 80cc kit? Sounds interesting. I assume a larger carb would be necessary?
Cheers Chunky

Sorry Chunky, not paying attention, I forgot dragging is your problem not slipping!!

I don't know who made the 80cc kit, I picked one up second hand from a chap in Shepton Mallet many years ago, I ran it on my Enduro for about ten years with a 19mm carb. At that time I wouldn't have known how to set it up properly anyway so it wasn't much faster than the standard 7 HP 50 barrel I run.

I have now sold it on to a Gilera 50 enthusiast in Sweden after he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Bob says they are more common over there, he did actually have a brand new one in his place some ago but it was expensive, around 200 euro as I remember. He's the man to contact for more info though.
